As self-proclaimed “hopeless architectural romantics,” the owners undertook a thorough 2 ½ year renovation of this historic shingle-style cottage in the heart of East Hampton’s estate neighborhood minutes to the ocean.
They were dedicated to maintaining the authentic period character of the classic while making a home for their young family with large light-filled spaces, bleached fir floors, crisp contemporary moldings, state-of-the-art technology, and fully finished lower level.
All the home’s windows and doors—including the sturdy oak Dutch entry door—were painstakingly rejuvenated.
The entry stairhall has the original restored leaded-glass, and opens to a large light-filled living room with fireplace.
The public spaces are, as Guzmán describes them in Architectural Digest, “invitingly informal,” with the relaxed but refined feel particular to contemporary style.
During the renovation, sheetrock was removed to reveal the living room’s original beamed ceiling. An expanse of French doors opens to a bluestone dining terrace with built-in barbecue.
The separate dining room has a bay window and working fireplace.
The heart of the eight-bedroom home is a wonderful light-filled kitchen with hewn beams and a quiet early-20th-century style—augmented by top-tier appliances.
The centerpiece is a six-by-12-foot island with a two-inch-thick slab Carrara marble top. Free of overhead cabinets, the tiled walls take center stage with over 6,000 clay tiles hand-produced by Clayhaus in Oregon in a custom warm white glaze. A series of adjacent smaller rooms and a porch were united as one sunlight-flooded breakfast area with sparkling mullioned windows on three sides.
With 10 foot ceilings and polished cement floors, the fully finished lower level was designed with casual enjoyment—billiards, movies—in mind. In addition there is a full bedroom suite and a laundry center.
The center staircase with original leaded-glass windows leads to four bedroom suites on the second floor and an additional 3 bedrooms on the third floor.
The sun-filled master suite features a fireplace.
The Carrera-marble master bath includes a soaking tub with Lefroy Brooks fittings, an oversized shower and a breezy private sunporch overlooking the grounds.
The house has a total of eight bedrooms.
There is a cozy second floor study/TV room with fireplace.
The fully finished third floor has three bedrooms with original wainscoting.
The house is on 1.1 gated acres with magnificent old trees. The 45 foot pool is heated and surrounded by open lawn. There is also a trellis-shaded terrace/poolhouse and detached garage.
Hampton Village and the ocean are mere minutes away—but that assumes one would want to leave this stylish oasis in the first place.
