Sotheby’s International Realty has listed the iconic Sturges Residence, designed in 1939 by Frank Lloyd Wright, and it will be sold at auction by Los Angeles Modern Auctions on February 21, 2016, in association with Sotheby’s International Realty.

Of the jewel box home, Barry Sloane, specialist in Historic & Architecturally Significant Properties at the Beverly Hills Brokerage, proclaims, “This is the only example of Wright’s Usonian design in California and a rare opportunity to purchase an architectural masterpiece.”

For decades the home of two Hollywood luminaries — filmmaker James Bridges and actor, playwright, and librettist Jack Larson — the Brentwood landmark is on the market for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Sited on double lot on the edge of a sloping hillside, it is considered by many to be the most striking of Wright’s Usonian homes — which were designed for the American middle class of the architect’s time. Architect and Taliesin fellow John Lautner supervised the original construction of the home and was commissioned to restore it in 1970.

A designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, the Sturges House soars above a central brick core and is cantilevered beyond its base, creating a sense of motion and an elegant streamlined shape recalling a stately yacht. Walls of brick and horizontal bands of timeless redwood are its underpinnings.

The dramatic 1,200-square-foot floor plan consists of an open living room with a brick fireplace, a dining room with built-in shelving, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a workroom.

Outdoors, a vast balcony terrace and a roof deck were designed to take in the ocean views. Hallmarks of Wright’s unmistakable style can be found throughout.

The sale of the property will benefit the Bridges/Larson Foundation, and the proceeds will support charitable, scientific, literary, and educational endeavors. Original Wright furnishings, fine art — including pieces by David Hockney, Andy Warhol, and Alex Katz — decorative art, and design collectibles from this historic property will be featured in additional lots in the auction.
