When the owners of a Mediterranean-style villa on the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth hired world-renowned designer Juan Pablo Molyneux to enliven their home, he sought to create something “cozier and more classical” than a typical Palm Beach residence.
As Molyneux told Architectural Digest in 2008, the homes in the area were too often “decorated like resort hotels,” so this one would be more of “a winter palace.”
The residence was inspired by the work of Addison Mizner, the architect whose Mediterranean and Spanish-Colonial Revival homes reshaped South Florida in the 1920s.
An incomparable retreat, the villa stands out as a breathtaking example of Palm Beach style, combining European elegance and contemporary comfort.
Vast, inviting, festive and liveable, the home occupies some 24,600 square feet and counts eight bedrooms, eleven full and eight half baths, a library, a formal dining room and a living room with French doors that open to a coquina terrace.
It also features a billiards room, a chef’s kitchen with butler’s pantry, a wine cellar and staff quarters, among other amenities.
From coffered ceilings and stone fireplaces to gilt-embossed leather walls and trompe l’œil finishes, every room displays the designer’s exceptional attention to refinement and detail.
Pointing to the luminous Venetian plaster walls, Molyneux explains, “The pigment is built up in layers so that it glows from within.”
Using gold, turquoise, citrine, ochre, coral and terracotta, Molyneux’s palette mirrors the surrounding landscape.Windows throughout capture views of water, sky and trees.
Outdoors, stairs cascade from the loggias of two pavilions to gorgeous terraces, a courtyard lush with bougainvillea, a heated swimming pool and a dock on the lake.
Oceanside, formal gardens give way to a beautiful, privately accessed beach; elsewhere, a guest and pool house, as well as an expansive brick motor court, beckon.
This is a place where Molyneux’s artfulness reigns. Thanks to the owners’ careful stewardship, it is also a home with pride of place among Palm Beach’s estates and landmarks.
