“So many Palm Beach houses are decorated like resort hotels,” world-renowned designer Juan Pablo Molyneux told Architectural Digest in 2008. When owners of a majestic Mediterranean-style villa on the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth commissioned him to enliven their new home his distinctive style, his idea was to create something “both cozier and more classical: a winter palace.”
The residence is clearly inspired by the work of the great architect Addison Mizner, whose Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial Revival styles reshaped South Florida. It is an incomparable retreat, a breathtaking example of Palm Beach style, with its singular combination of European elegance and contemporary comfort.
Vast yet inviting, festive, and livable, the home spans approximately 24,600 square feet and includes eight bedrooms, 11 full and eight half baths, family rooms, a library, a formal dining room, a living room with French doors to a coquina terrace, a piano or card room, a billiards room, a chef’s kitchen with a butler’s pantry and superior appliances, a wine cellar, eight fireplaces, and staff quarters.
Every room has a distinct character and displays an exceptional attention to refinement and detail, from the gilt-embossed leather walls, embellished moldings, handsome wood and leather paneling, and coffered ceilings to the exquisite chandeliers, stone fireplaces, and eye-catching trompe l’oeil finishes. Of the luminous Venetian plaster walls, Molyneux explained that “the pigment is built up in layers so that it glows from within.” Molyneux’s palette mirrors the glorious enveloping landscape with its gold, turquoise, citrine, ocher, coral, and terra-cotta. Windows throughout capture inspiring views of water, sky, and trees.
Outdoors, stairs cascade from the loggias of two pavilions to gorgeous terraces, a colorful courtyard lush with bougainvillea, an alluring heated swimming pool, and a well-equipped dock on the lake. Ocean-side formal gardens give way to a beautiful privately accessed beach.
Completing the impressive picture are an expansive brick motor court with a six-car garage and a guest and pool house with his and her cabana baths and an outdoor kitchen. It is a place pervaded by the artfulness and unique flair of Molyneux.
Thanks to this and the owners’ careful stewardship, the home holds a place of prominence among the lavish estates and highly prized landmarks in the storied community of Palm Beach.
