Tour an Architectural Triumph in Los Angeles

The Barrington Residence

One of the most significant architectural achievements in Los Angeles, the Barrington Residence is a singular contemporary home, a series of planes cascading down a hillside in Brentwood.

Renowned architect Eric Rosen, who aims to “study and understand the existing context and … reveal the beauties that already exist,” carved away parts of the site to make way for the 9,000-square-foot residence, which is cleverly embedded in the landscape, with portions of the roof covered in emerald grass.

Rosen’s experimental design—influenced by 1970s conceptual artist Gordon Matta-Clark and consisting of a series of polygons—makes the most of sleek modern geometrical aesthetics.

It is a unique architectural feat, setting a new standard for luxurious modern living and offering an array of comfortable, purposeful spaces—nearly all of which enjoy views of treetops and the canyon and are accented by hand-selected materials and cutting-edge amenities.

Designed for definitive indoor-outdoor living, the home takes its lead from the site, unfolding in a Z shape along a serene slope, with Fleetwood pocket doors and floor-to-ceiling windows filling the spaces with light and erasing the boundaries between indoors and out.

Beginning with a dramatic entry of white Italian marble and glass, the main level features a seamless collection of living and entertaining spaces, including top-of-the-line chef’s kitchen, a dining area, a family room, and a living room with a bar area.

An eye-catching stairway with cantilevering concrete treads leads to a den, the master suite, and four-bedroom guest quarters. The lower floor houses an office and a recreation room that could easily be converted into a private screening room and a wine cellar. An array of environmentally conscious and energy-efficient elements were incorporated, including a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system, a solar-powered pool ionizer, honeycomb radiant-heated floors, and tankless on-demand hot water.

The home’s grassy rooftop affords a commanding view of the Getty Center, and on the eastern side of the residence, stairs descend through the tiered landscaped hillside.

The nearly one-acre lot also includes a generous sports court and a swimming pool.

The accompanying pool house sits atop the grounds, acting like an anchor for this series of striking, inviting residential planes, creating a truly one-of-a-kind setting for Southern California living and entertaining.
