With some of the deepest musical history and most historic luxury real estate in the country, San Francisco is a cultural gold mine. The San Francisco Opera Guild is one of the more beloved nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area and all of California, and is set to kick off its 94th season this September. Opening night at the War Memorial Opera House is not to be missed, and will be held at 5:00 p.m. PDT on Sept. 9.
This is perhaps the biggest social event of the year for opera lovers in the Bay Area, and will transcend just a night out on the town. Rather, Opera Ball 2016 will begin with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and the opportunity to get out on the dance floor. At around 6:30 p.m., the Bravo! Club Gala will take place for about an hour.
Of course, the opening night will peak with the operatic performance of Andrea Chénier, with music by Umberto Giordano and directed by Nicola Luisotti, libretto from Luigi Illica, and directed by the legendary David McVicar. As a note, this opera will be performed in Italian, but English supertitle will be available to attendees. Its runtime is about two and a half hours including a short intermission.
Tickets are available through the San Francisco Opera Guild’s website, and anyone who loves opera, or simply the beautiful culture that makes San Francisco such a beloved city, are encouraged to purchase theirs soon. If you miss out on opening night, Andrea Chénier will be performed several times through the end of September.
